The project at the „Rathenauplatz“ in Nuremberg, which has now commenced, is expected to continue until Saturday, December 13, 2025, according to VAG plans. During these six months, VAG users will need to brace themselves for disruptions and replacement services.

This is because the entire construction period will impact tram line 8, which cannot operate as usual. Trams arriving from the „Doku-Zentrum“ will terminate at the main train station before heading back. From the main station, passengers can switch to the U-Bahn lines U2 and U3 to reach „Rathenauplatz“. From there, VAG will provide replacement buses labeled E8, running to „Erlenstegen“ and back.

However, there are exceptions: Between June 10 and 22 as well as between August 4 and 15, track construction work is also scheduled in the subway area. Therefore, during these periods, buses on route E8 will operate from „Hauptbahnhof“ to „Erlenstegen“ and vice versa.

In both instances, the buses will follow the route that line 8 would normally take. Where feasible, they will serve the original tram stops; in other situations, the VAG will set up temporary stops nearby.

What's actually being renewed and resolved?

The VAG is working on several projects simultaneously, according to a statement. They are renewing approximately 150 meters of tracks at the height of the „Wöhrder Wiese“ tram stop and are also making the stop accessible for everyone. Both measures are being carried out by the city of Nuremberg as part of the ongoing renovation of the nearby „Steubenbrücken“.

Around „Rathenauplatz“, VAG is renovating the tracks to prepare the area for two future tram lines. Starting in September 2026, tram line 7 will run towards „Stadtpark“, joining line 8. Along „Äußere Sulzbacher Straße“, VAG is refurbishing approximately 600 meters of tracks — about 480 meters near the „Ostbahnhof“ and another 120 meters around „Thumenberger Weg“. The station with the same name will also be upgraded for accessibility. These updates are being carried out due to the age of the tracks, as they have reached the end of their average 30-year lifespan.

Alternative Route via Thumenberger Weg

Since the end of May, work has been underway to renew the railway bridge over „Thumenberger Weg“. The construction work is expected to continue until the end of 2027. During this time, bus line 45 („Frankenstraße“ – „Ziegelstein“) will have to alter its route. Additionally, from June 10 to early July 2025, the VAG will be conducting track maintenance here, resulting in the following detour for bus 45: heading towards „Ziegelstein Süd“, the route will deviate from the „Goldhammer“ stop via „Dr.-Carlo-Schmid-Straße“, „Dr.-Gustav-Heinemann-Straße“, and „Äußere Sulzbacher Straße“. The buses will then use „Eichendorffstraße“ and return to their regular route from the "Dresdener Straße" stop. In the direction of „Ziegelstein Süd“, bus line 45 will not stop at „Thumenberger Weg“; the VAG will establish a temporary stop at „Äußere Sulzbacher Straße 184“. The „Steinplattenweg“ stop will be discontinued without replacement.

During the VAG's track construction work, other city partners are seizing the opportunity to implement upcoming measures in this area. The aim is to coordinate these efforts to reduce replacement traffic and costs, thereby alleviating some of the burden on passengers and other road users. For instance, „Stadtentwässerung- und Umweltanalytik Nürnberg“ (SUN) is carrying out sewer construction work, the „Servicebetrieb Öffentlicher Raum“ (Sör) is handling road construction tasks, and „N-Ergie“ is renewing water pipelines.

In parallel with these measures, the City of Nürnberg has created an interactive map displaying the individual construction phases and their impact on private, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic.
